Does that put it into perspective for you?
Seriously. I always have to try to put this into perspective for people. People act like slavery was so distant. My mom is older in relation to my age (she had me at 43), and her father was older when she was born (in his early 50’s) and was born in the late 1800’s. One of his PARENTS was born into slavery. For people like my mom, this isn’t the least bit distant. My mom grew up in the Jim Crow south. History is so depersonalized that people can act like slavery, Jim Crow, and blatantly racist institutions existed in 1800 BC
I have an aunt who died in 02 who was born in 1898.
I’d LOVE for someone to have told her that slavery was “long ago”.
My mother was born in 1956.. My grandmother in 1937.. My great grandparents in 1919… My great great granddad in the 1890’s and his parents who were born just shy of slavery…. All of these people were alive when my mother was younger… And my great great granddad died when I was 4! So please tell me how long ago slavery was again??
My grand mother was a sharecropper’s daughter….Who do you think her parents were the children of?
My great grandmother was a sharecropper. She told me before she passed away (at 92.. long life!) that they used to pick cotton and farm.
My great grandma was born in 1923,im sitting next to her right now,she says hi! her mother was born in 1890,she died in 99’(yes at 109) so I knew her VERY well. HER PARENTS WERE BORN IN 1840,THEY WERE SLAVES AND MY GREAT GREAT GRAN WAS BORN TO SLAVE PARENTS.
so literally for the first 9 years of MY life I sat on the lap of a woman who’s parents were slaves, who deal with the last waves of slavery and share cropping. And who FULLY dealt with the Jim Crow south. WHOS HUSBAND WAS LYNCHED IN MISSISSIPPI IN 1935.
Her husband was my great grandmas dad. My great grandma is still alive. Like i said I’m sitting next to her RN.
So I literally sat in the lap of a former slaves daughter for the first yea for the first 9 yrs of my life who’s husband was lynched in ‘35 by an angry mob of klansman. And who’s daughter who was beaten and raped and sprayed down by water canons by cops during the civil rights movement.
PLEASE FUCKING TELL ME HOW LONG AGO SLAVERY WAS
PLEASE TELL MY GREAT GRANDMA WHOS WATCHING TMZ LIVE RN,HOW LONG AGI SLAVERY AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT WAS
TELL HER HOWN LONG AGO IT WAS WHEN HER FATHER WAS CASTRATED AND HUNG FROM A TREE
TELL HER HOW POST RACIAL WE ARE NOW
SO I LITERALLY GREW UP WITH A MOTHER AND PARENTS AN GRAND PARENTS WHO HMHAD TO DEAL WITH THE CHILD IF A FORMER SLAVE AND THE CHILD OF A MAN WHO WAS LYNCHED AND CASTRATED DO. YOU know what kind of shit they been threw? How it fucked up their minds? How they had a hard time coping with PTSD!? Fun fact most slaves and the descendants of slaves have/had PTSD. That effects our parenting. That effects the entire culture. That causes lots of drama. Tell me how far ago that was. WHEN IM THE FIRST GENERATION THAT ACTUALLY FEELS “free”!! When I’m STILL dealing with the emotional hang ups of a woman who watched her father be lynched by the damn KKK. IM STILL DEALING WITH THAT SHIT! Don’t you ever fucking tell me how “long” ago that was!!! It’s not you silly asshole!
